Baby Boomer Health Cost Factors by Terry Stanfield

Baby boomer health cost factors are coming more and more to the forefront of any discussion on controlling health care costs in this country. That is because this important age demographic (those people born between 1945 and 1964) is one of the largest blocks of people in this country. They are also entering their retirement years at ever increasing numbers, and will require health care more often.

Just as with everything else to do with boomers, the movement of their demographic affects our society as a whole. In other words; what the boomers want, the boomers get and this is no different for healthcare than it is for just about anything else. Consider that many boomers who were extremely active in their younger years are now experiencing certain orthopedic issues, for example.

What this means is that the physical toll that this focus on activities that were physical in nature is beginning to manifest itself in hip and knee replacements, which are becoming an increasingly large proportion of the medical procedures that are being performed on boomers as they age. A single knee replacement can cost a princely sum of money and imagine what a double knee replacement runs.

Also, baby boomers move in these demographics as a group, therefore it is the group as a whole that will affect how healthcare resources are allocated across an increasingly strained system that may be in need of serious reform very soon. Medicare, which is already basically bankrupt, will not be able to absorb the costs needed to look after the health of this huge demographic.

It also seems that the current reforms being proposed by government — depending on who you talk to — may not come close to solving this problem. In fact, one of the ways in which the government intends to fund healthcare for everybody is to reduce the money given to Medicare by $500 billion over several years. Anybody who thinks that boomers are all that eager to see that happen needs to think again.

It may be that some sort of rationing scheme will need to be implemented to ensure that everybody who is entitled to healthcare gets it, but that is only one portion of controlling the costs involved in delivering health care to boomers. The whole system needs to be looked at, starting with how we keep medical records and what is done with them when they are needed, for example.

At any rate, rising baby boomer health cost issues will not be going away anytime soon, for it is this age demographic which is continuing to flood the retired ranks and is placing an ever increasing burden on government health resources such as Medicare. It is not their fault that they are doing this, but the medical issues that the elderly bring to the table are certainly helping to contribute to costs.

Before you go out and buy a policy go to Long Term Care Insurance, ask questions and request a long term care insurance quote.

The Realness - Extended Care Insurance is Necessary by Susan Kramper

There is a perfect surprise forming in long-term care. Many of those on the borderline are either oblivious to it, can’t understand that it will not happen to them or stalling believing they have a great deal of time to act.

If you reall you really want to know, taking responsibility for your long-term care today instead of tomorrow will give you alternatives that may not be available later. Your options will evaporate as you age and with that you won’t be as healthy.

The truth of the matter is that people are alive longer than in decades before and as there is an expanding requirement for long-term care. The resources for providing this kind of care are shrinking. There will be more “baby boomers” demanding this sort of care than there will be caregivers trained and able to provide care.

The public is not aware that Medicare isn’t a resolution to the long-term care challenges in America. According to Medicare & You 2010, Medicare only covers medically-necessary expert nursing facility or home health care if you fall within particular conditions. Long-term care can be supplied at home, in your area, in assisted living, or in a nursing home. A versatile nursing facility is paid for only after a 3-day minimum inpatient hospital visit for a related illness or injury. Medicare isn’t able to cover long-term care or custodial care in this setting. “Medicaid is a joint Federal and state program that helps pay medical costs if you have limited income and resources and meet other eligibility requirements.”

Umteen people have postponed obtaining long-term care insurance because they assume they will be provided benefits through the government. Perhaps, they also do not wholly understand the benefits of long-term care insurance.

It is vital to understand for yourself on what long-term care insurance can offer you and your family. How does it fit in with your general retirement plan? It is designed with a specific purpose in mind.

Long-term care insurance assists you in paying for services that other health insurances don’t pay for.

In the event you become incapable of taking of yourself, this insurance will take care of all of the obligatory costs to get you the assistance that you require. It pays for home care givers, home nurses, specialists, etc. It will even pay for care in facilities like: nursing homes and Alzheimer facilities. It will aid to pay for hospice care and respite care as well.

This is a an essential additional insurance to have. You will be happy to know you have reassurance by knowing that when you need this sort of care, no matter of how old you are, that all the costs will be covered and you will be ready to get good care. Regardless of what you may have thought, the majority of those who need this kind of care are working age people. That just goes to show you that even younger folks will benefit from this insurance and that it isn’t necessarily for the older generation.

Know Your Health Risk Factors to Prevent Disease by Ruthan Brodsky

A health risk factor is anything that increases your chance of getting sick, of getting a disease, of breaking a leg, or of gaining weight. The problem is it is tough keeping up with all the possible risks because they keep on changing. Let me simplify what is meant by health risk. There are certain risk factors that put you at high risk for various diseases and conditions and they are not likely to change, a least not for the next 20 years or so. For instance, being obese usually puts you at high risk for diabetes, for cardiovascular problems, for joint and tendon problems, and liver problems. Obesity is not going to change as a high risk factor.

Other risk factors can change. For instance, eating eggs, especially the yolks, at one time put you at high risk for cholesterol problems. Or at one time you thought eating apples was healthy and you ate one a day. Then the report was made public about the pesticides found on apples. You stopped eating them a year ago and then you switched to organic brands which promise less pesticide. Two years ago the risk of eating egg yolks was lowered. It happens all the time and now, with the Internet, we learn about the risk changes even quicker.

The fact is we are human beings and live in an imperfect world and whatever we do has a risk factor. Each time we choose to do something, consciously or unconsciously, we evaluate the risk factor that belongs to that task. We weigh the risk and the benefits. For instance, the drive to and from the airport is far more likely to end in injury or death than your flight to Chicago. Most often, we act on imperfect and incomplete information but we do the best that we can. In spite of ourselves, the world does not come to an end.

So how do we take in all this information and apply it to our health? How do we figure out what are our health risks.
One health risk that has been evaluated for you is the smoking factor. Most states have prohibited smoking in all public places and as a result fewer adults are not smoking. The number of teens not smoking, however, has not decreased as much. Teens think of themselves as able to handle any and all risks that life may throw at them. Adults, with their better developed brains, are better able to evaluate the risk of smoking to their health. When we take responsibility for our health, although you and I have no special expertise, to make intelligent decisions about our health based on the information and misinformation we receive, we need to look beyond the obvious.

For instance, there are hundreds of studies that show the relationship between cholesterol and heart disease. That is hardly news. What does become news is when there is a study that fails to make the connection. That becomes the study that makes the headlines. Even so common sense tells us it would be silly to change our lives based on just one news article and one study.

It is true that we should not throw out what we learn, but we do need to figure out what it means. If you are like me, you are not interested in taking a course in medical research. Still, there are some general principles that we can apply when trying to form intelligent opinions.

For instance, a good study has an objective, a particular finding that requires being researched. The information should be more than uncontrolled anecdotal rehashes. In fact, one important safeguard against bad science is peer review, in which scientists scrutinize the work of each in advance. You can be very skeptical of studies that have no peer review. On the other hand, just because a research article was peer reviewed does not mean some of the data can be wrong, or falsified.

A less formal way of figuring out the worth of a research report is to consider the opinions of the experts who are quoted in the press. It helps us, as consumers, to see the kinds of commentary a study evokes from the experts. They also may not guarantee that something is accurate but at least we get some consolation. Your personal physician is also a good source if you want help to interpret the data. What you should expect is that if the information stands up as accurate for several years, then the government and different associations establish guidelines and start offering free information on the topic.

Healthy Ears Let You Live Life To The Fullest by Mildred Guajardo

On your next shopping trip you might stop by a drugstore and purchase some earplugs. Not only will it be harder for you to hear when you are wearing them, but you will find that everything you do actually becomes harder. Even something as simple as a conversation can be a strain. You won’t be able to enjoy listening to any music, and TV will be a lot less enjoyable with muffled sound. You will even have problems knowing when there is movement inside your home. You will no longer be able to hear the closing of doors, the sound of timers going off, or the sound of air conditioners turning on.

You have just experienced the world of auditory isolation. You will be glad to know that most people can prevent hearing loss from happening. There are two fundamental types of hearing loss. When sound can’t get through the inner ear, the part where sound is translated, it’s known as conductive loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when sounds can reach the inner ear, but are either made quieter or misinterpreted due to damage to the inner ear fibers, the auditory nerve, or the brain. Many of the people who suffer with this type of loss also have to deal with tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing in the ear that happens either off and on or continuously. Many people will attest to the fact that this condition is worse than the hearing loss. Your doctor or an audiologist can help to determine which hearing loss you are suffering from through a thorough exam and review of your medical history. They typically use a hearing test to confirm the diagnosis they suspect.

For a problem with conductive hearing loss you might have something as easy to fix as wax in the ear canal, or it could be serious as needing surgery on the middle ear bones, called otosclerosis. When the loss is sensorineural in nature, the treatment can include a hearing aid or cochlear implants.

As a rule of thumb, whenever you must raise your voice over background noise for people to hear you, you should either move away from the source of the sound or use some protective plugs or headphones. The rock and roll that baby boomers loved to listen to growing up is costing many some ear problems now. Some of us spent time in the military or participated in shooting sports without protection and now suffer the same loss. Exposure to motors, machines, munitions and music leads to long term hearing damage. By the age of 55, it’s been stated that 20% of adults have some hearing loss, and by age 65, it will have affected 33%. Luckily, age-related hearing loss does not usually result in total deafness

People experiencing a loss of hearing in a single ear may have an acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor which interferes with the auditory nerve. This type of tumor is slow growing, however if left unchecked it could cause complete loss of hearing as well as other problems, and surgery is the normal treatment. Still more individuals are plagued by chronic ear infections that include middle-ear infections, measles, mumps, meningitis, and scarlet fever. All of the above may produce hearing loss and should be brought to the attention of a medical professional.

Anything that is blocking the ear canal can interefere with the transmission of sound. This includes ear wax which is pushed deeper into the ear canal by people who aggressively clean their ears with cotton swabs. It’s not a problem if you use those swabs with a light touch. If you have a frequent build up of wax, consult with a doctor. there are time that the hearing loss is caused by hardening of the bones in the middle ear or build up of fluid from allergies or infections.

Hearing can also be negatively affected by some antibiotics, drugs for treating malaria, heart anti-arrhythmics and even some drugs as safe as aspirin. Trauma is also a culprit in causing hearing loss. Our human sound systems can be damaged to various degrees by holes poked in the eardrum, skull fractures, excessive noise like gunfire or fireworks, and pressure-related trauma from underwater diving or airplane cabins. If you’re in a situation where you think you need earplugs to protect your ears, wear them. If you are someone who like to mow your own lawn, uses power tools on a regular basis, or is into target shooting, video games, or loud movies you should think seriously about wearing earplugs.

Relationship rescue - Defining Marriage Over Again by Jake Brown

Marriage is really a comical thing. The way you deem it is dramatically different if you are a young person or youth with stars in your eyes in comparison to your image of relationship when you can have been ensconced in the system for 20-thirty years as well as looking to a life in retirement as a married couple. Baby boomers have experienced all feature of marriage from that early idealistic stage through divorces, various redefinitions of marriage in addition to now whisking their marriages into their retirement years. It may be that this next transition of marriage will bring as many adjustments to that unique liaison as any that have gone before.
How you deem marriage as you progress in the direction of your retirement years undoubtedly depends on how relationship has gone for you over the years. If marriages are rocked with trouble, separations plus other woes, retirement could bring a brand new dimension to that pressure. On the other hand, a part of the commission of retirement is to begin to seek resolve of life’s struggles so working both with each other in the context of marriage could fetch huge healing during this phase of life.
All period of life generally bring a fresh opportunity to define marriage as well as how will probably be an important part of life. When the baby boomer generation grew to becomte parents, the change was notable as suppliers turned their focus on being first-class mothers in addition to dads in addition to away from youthful problems to some extent. Then as baby boomers moved out of parenting plus into the empty nest part of life, that looked as if it would bring as many issues as as soon as that nest filled with kids decades earlier.
There isn’t a question that actual life in the situation of an incredibly real in addition to functional marriage, even with the complications that brings can also be an enormous resource for us right through life’s trip. Whereas sometimes the romance could getaway from the marriage courtship if life brings struggles and as our bodies go through changes, that partnership as well as intimacy of liaison is an incredible source for dealing with the huge shifts all baby boomers have been required to face over the years.
This is the very good thing concerning hanging in there with that marriage until you are able to get to the period of life nearly all baby boomers are moving toward in this decade. The effects that can cheat a relationship of romance during the functioning part of your married years are the coming of kids, the working hard of rearing them, keeping a career moving forward in the hard business settings we’ve experienced in the last 3 decades in addition to seeing your special courtship change under that form of “pressure cooker” environment.
However a big amount of those pressures begin to lift as soon as you are capable of maybe reduce the work life, enjoy the fruits of the labors and allow the kids get out on their own. As a result that side of the pre-retirement years can actually be a fertile set for a new love life between husband plus wife to bounce up. Many partners, as they escape the world of parenting behind, feel such late in life love rebirths. And this kind of late springtime to your liaison together with your long time partner could bring the birth of new creativity in several parts of your life making it one of the happiest phases of life for yourself and your husband or consort.
A marriage gets tested all through youth in addition to middle age as well as marriages that survive do as a result cause of mutual support as well as the ability to simply accept the other part of the relationship and compromise. Since for these attributes will be well established in the relationship as you progress into your fifties plus sixties both, they will be a continuous source to you since you face retirement concerns, dealing with being grandparent plus being sensible counsel for children who are facing life’s struggles for the first time.
Nevertheless baby boomers really should not be surprised as long as they see their marriages still change, grow as well as mature in new directions as each companion finds this stage of life for the real first time as well. A marriage is really a living thing as a result we might take joy from seeing it can become something new each new decade as, as we have made often in the past, we begin understanding relationship all over again.

While in New York Visit The Grandaddy of Broadway Theatres

Of 40 Broadway theatres, two tower over the competition in terms of survival. Both The Lyceum and the New Amsterdam Theatres were built in 1903, although the Lyceum has the rare distinction of having had the same name since its opening. Located at 149 W 45th St, The Lyceum has never closed down, and has been in constant production since its very first opening night. The Lyceum was built by producer Daniel Frohman, some of whose furnishings, such as his monogrammed desk dating from 1903, are still housed in the theatre. The building retains most of its original architecture, which is in the French Beaux-Arts style as evidenced by the large columns and undulating marquee in front of the building. Over the years many famous performers have graced the stage of the Lyceum, including Fanny Brice, Ethel Barrymore and Basil Rathbone. Over the years some of the most well received shows at the Lyceum have included Look Back in Anger, A Taste of Honey, The Importance of Being Earnest and I Am My Own Wife. Next up at the Lyceum, Sarah Ruhl opens her play In The Next Room, on 19th November 2009.

Don’t Forget Off Broadway For Your New York Theater Experience

If you want something a little different on your next New York trip, venture Off-Broadway for your dose of theater. Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theaters abound and give you a chance to sample some of New York’s most cutting-edge theater. Back in the old days, these venues were those outside the “Broadway Box”; the main theater district. Nowadays the term has a new meaning. A theater’s size is what defines how a venue is classified now; Off-Broadway venues are theaters that seat 99-500, Off-Off-Broadway seat 99 or less. Off-Broadway venues offer directors and writers an opportunity to produce their shows at less cost, which is a necessary requirement for many up-and-coming creative artists. Many of the best shows on Broadway owe their success to their early days Off-Broadway. Rent, Little Shop of Horrors, Hair, Avenue Q, Spring Awakening, A Chorus Line and Doubt are a few shows that had their start Off-Broadway. If you are on a budget, Off-Broadway theaters are a great place to see more affordable shows, ticket prices can be kept down because of the usually lower production costs. If you need help getting started on what shows to see, go online and read as many reviews as you can, many of which will found in New York’s Time Out which can be found online.

How To Take A Broadway Theater Break Without Wearing Yourself Out

Your vacation plan for New York is a week filled with Broadway, Broadway and a little more Broadway. But like many people, you have a budget and not limitless reserves of energy. Firstly, don’t over plan. Have your hotel booked and meals budgeted for in advance but don’t schedule and buy tickets for every show you think you want to see. Once you are in Manhattan, reviews, advertising and local buzz will open your eyes to new shows that you will be happy you have plenty of free time to schedule in. Also, what you may not know is that New York is the best place to buy your tickets. Each night there are over 20,000 audience seats on Broadway, and there are always many shows with tickets available as the curtain rises. And you don’t need to traipse all over town buying tickets; make use of the TKTS booth in Duffy Square (at the corner of 47th Street and Broadway). The TKTs booth sells same-day tickets for all the Broadway theaters and at 25%-50% of the regular admission price. New tickets become available all day long, so you can wake up late, have a leisurely lunch, saunter down to the TKTS booth, and still make it to curtains up at 8pm. If you have plans away from the theater one night, take in a matinee show. You can see matinees at 2pm on Wednesday or Saturday or at 3pm on Sunday, and still make it to one of New York’s award winning restaurants in the evening. And finally, try to plan your trip so that you land in New York on a Monday when the theaters are closed, that way you can have a real day off before the entertainment begins.

Avenue Q Opens For A New Run at New World Stages

After a long run on Broadway, the unique and fabulous show Avenue Q opened up for an Off-Broadway run at New World Stages on October 9th. If you haven’t heard of the show, Avenue Q pays homage to Sesame Street, using puppets to tell a decidedly adult story. The show has memorable and catchy songs, is side-splittingly funny at times, and will make you cry at others. Although Avenue Q does use puppetry, it is not for children. Most children under 12 will not be ready for the themes of Avenue Q, and very small children (under 4) are not allowed in the theatre. The story centers on Princeton, a newcomer to New York who has big dreams and no money, and therefore settles in Avenue Q, the only neighborhood in his price range. The audience is then gradually introduced to his neighbors and goes along for the ride as the characters struggle to find jobs, dates and continue to search for their purpose in life. With over $250 million in earnings to date, Avenue Q is a popular show that is worth seeing on your next New York City vacation.

Take A Stroll Down Broadway After Dark

It really is a misnomer to talk about Broadway after dark, because the only time Broadway is dark in any way, is on Monday, when theaters are closed or in theater-speak; are”dark”. Even then, Broadway sleeps with all the lights on. Being fully lit all the time makes Broadway a wonderful place to go for a safe late night meander. Broadway is famously known for being well lit, as is confirmed by its historical nickname “the Great White Way”. Broadway’s alternate name dates from 1906 when theaters first used electric lights in their marquees. The colored bulbs that were originally used by theater owners burned out very rapidly so they switched to white bulbs. And hence we have The Great White Way. Now of course, lights of every shade illuminate the New York sky over Broadway. Perhaps Broadway’s lights gave rise to a nickname for New York itself; the city that never sleeps. So when you stay in New York, get in step with the name and take in the crisp air of late night Broadway, you will be tracing the footsteps of some of America’s brightest lights, our stars of the live theater. This is one time it is alright to wear your sunglasses at night.

Broadway Theatres and the Impresarios They are Named For

There are 40 theatres that make up the world famous Broadway theatre district. And many of these theatres pay tribute to the people who shaped the Broadway theater district into what it is today. For most visitors to New York the majority of these names elicit a momentary, Who is that? before being distracted by the many lighted marquees and the dazzling larger than life advertising. To appear like a real Broadway expert, here is a little help. The following theatres are named after the impresarios of Broadway; the men who directed, wrote, designed and put the money into bringing the theatre to life. David Belasco built the Belasco Theatre in 1907. Rumor has it that his ghost still haunts the theatre and that he was the first to make use of the “casting couch”. Dramatist and theatre manager George Howells Broadhurst opened the Broadhurst Theatre in 1917. The Broadhurst is still going strong today, and has hosted many successful plays in its 90 year history. The Cort Theatre on 48th Street, opened in 1912. Impresario and Seattle transplant John Cort commissioned this theatre. The Golden Theatre gets its name from John Golden. Golden bought and renamed the pre-existing theatre in 1937, which was converted to a movie theatre for some of its history. It was the theatre that housed the wildly successful Avenue Q which ran from 2003-2009.

Visit a Broadway Landmark Theatre, The Lyceum

Of 40 Broadway theatres, two tower over the competition in terms of survival. 1903 saw the completion of both the New Amsterdam Theatre and the Lyceum, with the Lyceum managing to retain the same name ever since opening night. And since that very first opening night the Lyceum, which you will find at 149 W 45th St, has been in perpetual operation. The Lyceum was built by producer Daniel Frohman, some of whose furnishings, such as his monogrammed desk dating from 1903, are still housed in the theatre. The Lyceum was built in the French Beaux-Arts style and maintains most of its original architecture including the undulating marquee that clearly distinguishes it from neighboring buildings. At various times, the Lyceum has been creative home to various well known actors, including Basil Rathbone, Fanny Brice and Ethel Barrymore. Over the years some of the most well received shows at the Lyceum have included Look Back in Anger, A Taste of Honey, The Importance of Being Earnest and I Am My Own Wife. Currently, Sarah Ruhl’s play In The Next Room is in rehearsals and will open at the Lyceum on November 19th, 2009.

Use the Tony Awards to Choose The Shows to See In New York

Consider seeing a couple of Broadway shows on your next visit to New York. Even if you have never been to the theatre, it is easy to find excellent shows to see. Don’t waste time reading all the reviews that subjective critics give; look instead at who won this year’s Tony awards. The Tony awards are like the Oscars of Broadway theatre. 700 theatre and media professionals judge which shows deserve to win, and with a number like that involved, you can be sure subjectivity is not a factor. Many of the shows that were awarded this past June are still playing on Broadway. Included were the musicals Billy Elliott which won 10 Tonys and Next to Normal which won three Tonys and the straight play winner was God of Carnage with three awards. Check the official website www. tonyawards. com for a full list of winners.

The Lyceum Theatre. Beautiful Architecture and a Long History

Only two Broadway theatres can claim to have been entertaining audiences for over 100 years. 1903 saw the completion of both the New Amsterdam Theatre and the Lyceum, with the Lyceum managing to retain the same name ever since opening night. You will find this old beauty of a theatre at 149 W 45th St, where it has been in permanent production since opening night in 1903. Basil Rathbone, Ethel Barrymore and Fanny Brice have been among the many famous names to tread the boards of the Lyceum. Not unsurprisingly, a number of notable productions have also drawn acclaim here; the list includes Look Back in Anger, The Importance of Being Earnest, A Tase of Honey and I Am My Own Wife. Next up at the Lyceum, Sarah Ruhl opens her play In The Next Room, on 19th November 2009.

Suggestions On What Live Theater To See This Year In New York

In a city like New York, making choices about what live theater to see can be a near impossible task. Like most, your budget is probably limited and you only have a short while to spend in the theater during your stay in New York, so you have to plan accordingly. For a guaranteed night to remember, catch Wicked at the Gershwin Theater. It has had great reviews since it opened in 2003, and having been born out of a well-regarded contemporary novel, it has an interesting plot to go along with the music. For singing and dancing you can’t beat Billy Elliott at the Imperial Theater. The show tells an uplifting tale about a boy with a talent for ballet, but much standing in his way to reach his dreams. For a touch of drama see Sienna Miller’s star turn in After Miss Julie which plays the American Airlines Theater. Patrick Marber bases his play on Miss Julie, a play by August Strindberg, taking audiences to the English countryside for a tale of sex and power. For lighter fare, and a classic New York experience, take in a Neil Simon show. Simon’s play, Brighton Beach Memoirs, which tells of a 1930’s Jewish family living in Brooklyn, can be seen at the Nederlander Theater.

Broadway Theatres and the Impresarios They are Named For

40 venues have the distinction of being known as official Broadway theatres. A number of these venues pay homage to the theatre professionals who made Broadway what it is. But most people seeing the names honored would momentarily wonder “Who is that?” before being distracted by the sights of Broadway. So here is a quick introduction for you to share with those you wish to impress. The following theatres are named after the impresarios of Broadway; the men who directed, wrote, designed and put the money into bringing the theatre to life. In 1907, impresario David Belasco built the Belasco Theatre. It is rumored that Belasco was the first to use the infamous “casting couch” and there have been many reports that his ghost haunts his theatre to this day. The Broadhurst Theatre opened in 1917 and was named after George Howells Broadhurst; a theatre manager and dramatist. The theatre has been in constant use as a live theatre venue ever since, recently featuring Daniel Radcliffe in Equus. Since 1912, 48th Street has been home to the Cort Theatre. The Cort was commissioned by John Cort, also a significant theatre manager originally from Seattle. John Golden is the namesake of the Golden Theatre. John Golden acquired it and renamed it after himself in 1937, and although it was turned into a movie theatre during the 1940’s and 1950’s, it has since been converted back to theatrical use. After a brief period as a movie theatre in the mid-20th century, The Golden has since been converted into a legitimate theatre space once again. From 2003-2009 this theatre hosted the hugely popular Avenue Q.

Take An Illuminating Walk Down Broadway

There really is no such thing as Broadway after dark, unless you are referring to Monday when Broadway theaters are closed, or in theater jargon “are dark”. But even on Mondays, Broadway likes to leave a night light on. Being fully lit all the time makes Broadway a wonderful place to go for a safe late night meander. Broadway is historically famous for being a well lit place, as is evidenced by its other name, “the Great White Way”. Broadway’s alternate name dates from 1906 when theaters first used electric lights in their marquees. The colored bulbs that were originally used by theater owners burned out very rapidly so they switched to white bulbs. And hence we have The Great White Way. Of course, now Broadway is lit up by every color and flashing light under the sun. Perhaps Broadway’s lights gave rise to a nickname for New York itself; the city that never sleeps. So while you visit New York, why not take that name to heart and wander Broadway late at night, strolling under the marquees that feature the names of more bright lights; the stars who illuminate our American stages. Don’t leave your hotel room without your sunglasses.

Add The American Theatre Hall of Fame to Your Broadway Tour.

Next time you are visiting Broadway, make sure to stop in at the American Theatre Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is found in the lobby of the George Gershwin Theatre, and it celebrates the brightest of Broadway, in particular those who have been in the theatre for over 25 years. Nominees must also have at least five major theatrical productions in their resume. Included in the list of recipients are actors, producers, writers, designers and directors. Each of the inductees is honored with a plaque hanging in the Hall of Fame. Considering the length of Broadway’s history, the group of just over 100 inductees is relatively small, although names are added every year. Names of those inducted that you may have heard of include John Lithgow, Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters and Andrew Lloyd Weber. Located at 222 West 51st Street, the Gershwin Theatre is currently staging the Tony award-wining show Wicked. Get tickets to see the Wicked and spend intermission checking out the famous names hanging on the wall in the lobby at the American Theater Hall of Fame.

21 Club. A Dramatic Place To Eat Before a Broadway Show.

Even though life moves fast in New York, the people who live here respect their history. It would nice to have every visitor New York say thank you for that. The desire to hold onto that which is historically significant is very evident in the preservation of New York City’s ‘21’ Club. 21, as it is affectionately called, is a close jaunt to the Broadway theatre district and celebrates its 80th birthday this year. Back in 1920, when prohibition began, cousins Charlie Berns and Jack Kriendler entered the flourishing speakeasy business. After a few early attempts, the cousins finally settled into business at 21 W 52nd Street. The club opened in the early morning of the 31st of December, 1929 and has never looked back. If you only have a small budget for dining in New York, you must eat at 21; even if you have to go hungry the rest of the time. You will be rubbing shoulders with New York’s finest. Every President (excepting George W. Bush) has dined here. John F Kennedy chose 21 for his post inauguration meal. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart had their first date at 21; or so the story goes. And back in 1931, Ernest Hemmingway was caught with gangster Legs Diamond’s girlfriend doing some “baking” in the 21 kitchen. With its fantastic and spectacular history, 21 is a perfect accompaniment to a night on Broadway.

That Great Little Hole-In-The-Wall. The Best Off-Broadway Theatres

Don’t forget to see a show outside of Broadway on your next trip to New York. Off-Broadway theatres have some of the finest, most challenging works on their stages. Here are a couple of the well-respected and attended theatres that seat 99-500 people. In the East Village area of Manhattan, visit the New York Theatre Workshop for outstanding theatre. Rent debuted here in 1994 before going on to worldwide success. Many established directors and writers have worked at the New York Theatre Workshop since its first opening night in 1982. Caryl Churchill, Alan Ball and Tony Kushner are a few whose works have been developed here. Next up at the New York Theatre Workshop is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, opening November 13th, 2009. Also look at visiting the Public Theatre, in its 42nd year, as it is another fantastic example of Off-Broadway theatre. Headquartered at 425 Lafayette St, The Public Theatre staged the world-premiere of Hair as its opening show and went on to have other major successes including the sensational A Chorus Line. This first run of A Chorus Line sold out before opening night. In its time, the Public Theatre has won hundreds of theatre awards. Today the Public theatre includes five separate spaces for theatre and a cabaret pub venue. For more information about the current season, visit the Public Theatre’s website.

The Lyceum Theatre. Beautiful Architecture and a Long History

There are 40 professional theatres on Broadway, but two stand above the rest in terms of longevity. 1903 saw the completion of both the New Amsterdam Theatre and the Lyceum, with the Lyceum managing to retain the same name ever since opening night. You will find this old beauty of a theatre at 149 W 45th St, where it has been in permanent production since opening night in 1903. The Lyceum was built by producer Daniel Frohman, some of whose furnishings, such as his monogrammed desk dating from 1903, are still housed in the theatre. The original French style Beaux-Arts architecture is mostly intact and can be seen throughout the Lyceum and nowhere else more strikingly evident than in the theatre’s undulating marquee. Currently, Sarah Ruhl’s play In The Next Room is in rehearsals and will open at the Lyceum on November 19th, 2009.
